Team Alberta Shines at 2024 JCC Maccabi Games

I would like to take a moment to reflect on Team Alberta’s recent participation in the 2024 JCC Maccabi Games in Detroit. For our 20 teen participants from Edmonton and Calgary, this year’s games were more than just an athletic competition; they were a testament to the resilience, unity, and strength of the Jewish community. The JCC Maccabi Games have always been a celebration of Jewish youth, bringing together teens from around the world to compete, connect, and grow.

From the instant we landed in Detroit, this significance was clear to our teens. They had the great privilege of sharing a bus to the JCC with the Israeli delegation, who had arrived at the same time. This year’s games were special.

Make no mistake about it, the competitive aspects of the games were also fantastic, and on that front, our teens came home winners. With multiple medals in swimming (three), dance (four), and tennis (three), Team Alberta achieved considerable athletic success. Our teens, who did not achieve a podium finish, found other ways of triumph in making new friends and forming bonds that will last a lifetime.

Overall, the games provided a space for Jewish teens to express their identity proudly and form lasting friendships. These connections, forged through the spirit of competition and teamwork, transcended the playing fields and reminded us of the power of unity.

As we light the Shabbat candles tonight, let us draw inspiration from the collaboration and determination of our young athletes. May their example inspire us to stand together and uplift one another.

This experience would not have been possible without the generous support of the Edmonton Jewish Community Charitable Foundation, the Jewish Community Foundation of Calgary, the Jewish Federation of Edmonton, and the Paperny Family JCC of Calgary. Toda raba!

Shabbat Shalom,
